As we all know, even these rough times will pass. We have all heard so many different reports about: a) we are past the worst of this and are on the road to recovery; or b) the worst is yet to come and it is going to take YEARS for us as a Nation to fully recover. Of course, we would all like to believe in a), but realistically, can anyone foresee the future? I bet the fortune tellers are making a killing this time of year...hey, maybe that should be a new sideline....you never know...or do you....?
Anyway, despite the possible dire warnings, you as a business owner have to keep your eye on YOUR business ball. The economy will do what it is going to do, despite your thrashings and worries. You can only control what your business is going to do, nothing more. The key is to have a good business plan in place, and most importantly, follow the plan. If you find, due to external factors that your plan is not working and does not look like it will succeed, review your plan and revise accordingly. Remember, you are revising your short-term plans, not your long-term plans and goals. This may sound corny, but where there is a will, there is a way.
Here is a great example of what I mean when I state that where there is a will, there is a way. If you found a complimentary business opportunity that costs $1,500, you may immediately think that you cannot afford to spend that money. But, if you found the car of your dreams for $1,500 I bet that you would find a way to pay the $1,500. The difference is how much you want that particular item. If you really want your business to succeed, you will do whatever it takes (legally and ethically) to make your business succeed. If you are truly driven by a passion for your business, you will persevere, despite all obstacle's that may crop up.
The main key here is to be sure that your vision of your business is very clear and very, very desirable for you. It is much easier to be pulled along by your desires, than to push your desires along....kind of like the difference between pulling a rope and pushing a rope. If you have a clear picture of where you want your business to be, and the drive (not willpower, which does wear thin over extended difficult times) you will find the means to get your business where it needs to go. The path you take to keep your business successful, may not be the path you would originally have planned, but again, if you have a clear goal of where you want to be, you will find the means to get there.
Keep a record of where you ultimately want your business to be, place that statement where you see it daily. Track smaller milestones, and even the smaller daily tasks to drive your business towards your ultimate goal. Each day, review the tasks you have been taking, and compare the results with your intermediate and long-term goals. Be sure to not get side-tracked, always keep the larger goal in mind. You may be surprised that one of the smaller tasks, may actually take you in a different direction, but ultimately towards your large goal. Do not lose faith in what you envision for your business. Surviving this tough time will only make you and your business better and stronger in the long run.
