Tonight we are going to discuss the differences between motivation and action. Motivation is defined as "the activation or energization of goal-oriented behavior." Motivation may mean you "want" to do something very much, but if you don't put that "want" into action, nothing will occur.
Just going to motivational seminars may make you feel better about yourself, but once you leave the seminar, what are the chances that you will take action on the items you learned in the seminar? I used to love motivational seminars until I realized that all the motivation in the world is not going to change the world I live in unless I DO something. You may be motivated to make changes in your current work conditions, but if you don't actively do something about it, all the motivational speaking in the world will not change your situation. You need to generate action from that motivation.
Motivational seminars are great. They may get you thinking in ways you didn't before. They may help you to crystallize what you really want out of life. They may give you more ideas about how to improve your life. What I have found that they don't usually give you is a road map to follow to actually apply actions to those motivations. You need to identify what you want out of life, that is important, but what is more important is to take steps to get to your desired place. This is why I really like the little "GPS" tracker we are using for growing our UltraLuster business.
This tracker is great because it gives you points for doing small steps towards your larger goal. We all realize that the best plans in the world are not going to go as planned. It is no different than your "To Do" list. Things will get done, and others won't. The key is to re-adjust your actions to catch up on those small steps that you may have missed one day. Having the large goals is very important, writing them down is even more important, but, you really need to have tiny, little steps written down so that you can ultimately achieve your big goals. Motivation is not going to get you where you want to go, you will be motivated to do the steps, but you actually have to take action and do the steps so that you can attain your goals.
By identifying the little steps needed to obtain your larger goal, and then breaking those little tasks into daily tasks. By keeping track of the action on the daily tasks, you will ultimately get to your large goal. Again, we have been motivated many times over the years, but the motivation soon wears off and all you are left are empty ideas and no actual results. Once you have identified your important goal, write it down. Then be very, very specific in what actions you need to take in order to ultimately achieve your big goal. Once you have identified the small / repetitive actions needed to achieve that goal, track those actions daily. With daily tracking of your activity, you will find that your big goals are quickly achieved.
